Midfielder leaves seagulls to join Red Devils
“It is an incredible feeling to join the club of my dreams. Playing at Old Trafford is always special but the opportunity to do so as a Manchester United player will be a real honour.”
Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Carlos Baleba from Premier League rivals Brighton and Hove Albion.
The midfielder has joined on a deal believed to be around £65M up front, with £5M in add-ons. The south coast club have also inserted a sell-on clause.
He had yet to appear for Brighton this after suffering an ankle knock in pre-season. He becomes the third midfielder to arrive at the club after the signing of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.
The 22-year-old Cameroonian international first made his start in European football after he joined Lille in January 2022. It would be the following season where he made his professional debut. He went on to make 21 appearances in League 1 that season. It drew the attention of the bigger leagues and Brighton signed him in August 2023.
His form in his first two seasons made him stand out as one of the best young midfielders in the league. Equally adapt at performing the deep lying role, charging from box to box or pressing high up. A goal against West Ham in particular was named goal of the month. Last season was more of a challenge as injury and form proved to be an issue. He still managed to make over 30 league appearances though.
He spoke to the club website on the news: “I cannot wait to work with Michael Carrick; his experience and knowledge of the game make him the perfect coach to help me to reach the highest level.
“The ambition of everyone at the club is extremely clear, the future is hugely exciting, and I am determined to play my part in delivering the success that we are capable of together.”
Director of Football, Jason Wilcox, added: “Carlos is an elite midfielder with immense potential to develop further. He brings a unique combination of qualities that will really complement our squad.”
“We are delighted to further strengthen our midfield with the addition of another established senior international with a proven track record of performing in the Premier League.”
He has signed a five year deal with the option of a further year. He will be wearing the number 20 shirt this season.
