Midfielder leaves on permanent deal
Manchester United announced today the departure of Toby Collyer to Championship side West Bromwich Albion.
The fee is undisclosed, but believed to be around £3M. With add-on’s, it could be worth around £7.6M. In addition, a sell on clause of 40% is included too.
The midland club experienced a difficult time last season. They just about managed to avoid relegation to League One. They will be aiming to looking upwards this season though.
A bright start but injuries halt him
The 22-year-old defensive midfielder joined us in 2024 after coming through the academy at Brighton. Having initially started in the under-18’s and under-21’s, he progressed to the first team squad ahead of the 2023/24 season. He featured in the pre-season that summer, before making his competitive debut in the Community Shield. He also made his league, FA Cup and European debut that season. A serious injury halted his progression though.
West Brom took him on a season long loan to get more first team experience under his belt. Despite a decent start, a calf injury that November put him out of action. United recalled him back to Old Trafford, and the loan was cut short.
They made the decision for him to go on loan to Hull City for the rest of the season. Appearances were infrequent due to niggling injuries. He had to sit out whilst the club get promoted via the playoffs.
What he has to say
He spoke to the club website on the news: “There were a few reasons why I was so keen to return. The size of the club is one of them. I also really enjoyed my time here on loan in the first half of last season.”
“Another reason was the manager, James Morrison. He was really keen to have me back and that’s all you want in football.”
The contract is until 2030.
We wish him all the best.
