Some festive fun…

A set of Christmas facts and stats to entertain and amuse

Record Breakers

Manchester United are the side to have won the most Premier League games during the month of December. The reds have won a total of 386 points from 188 games not including the points acruced so far this month. That breaks down to just over two points a game. Given the lean years we have experienced since the retiring of Alex Ferguson, that is still highly impressive. Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham make up the rest of the top five.

Boxing Clever

This also extends to their record on Stephen’s Day. As fans up and down the country eased their hangovers and settled into their turkey sandwiches, we have witnessed them winning more than any other team. The Red Devils have won the traditional fixture 21 times since the 92/93 season netting 76 times to boot.

Familiar Faces

Aston Villa are the team that Man Utd have come up against the most over the year. Not including the most recent loss at Villa Park, the reds have faced the midlanders on 13 occasions. And it is a fixture that we have dominated. We have won 10 times, with 2 draws and just the one loss. Gabriel Agbonlahor proved to be the match winner back in 2009. And he has been dining out on that (along with everything else) since then.

Newcastle are close behind them with 11 matches. The barcoded bores had won their last two matches against us prior to the recent encounter. We had 6 wins in response.

Once in a lifetime

It is not surprising that we have only come up against the likes of Oldham Athletic, Bradford City, Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth just the once given that they have all slipped down the leagues since and have not reappeared since relegation.

Of the sides currently in the Premier League at the moment, we have not played Brighton and Hove Albion nor Brentford.

Hot shots

There have been plenty of faces on the scoresheet since Paul Ince netted against Manchester City on 06/12/92. Cristiano Ronaldo leads the way with 18 strikes thanks to two successive goal-laden seasons in 2007-08 and 2008-09. Ruud Van Nistelrooy is second on 16 with big hauls in 2001-02, 2005-06 and 2003-04. Strange considering we finished 3rd and 2nd those seasons. Ole Solksjaer is next with 15 thanks to solid returns in 1996-97, 1999-2000, and 2000-01 all in which we won the league.

Who are you?

Some of the more random goal scorers include David Bellion, Kleberson, Philip Neville, Radamel Falcao, Chris Smalling, and Darron Gibson. Plus a whole load of own goals.
