Carrick takes charge of Reds

Interim manager takes on the reigns full-time

Manchester United have officially announced the permanent appointment of Michael Carrick as manager.

He assumed the role of interim manager in January after Ruben Amoirm left the club. The Red Devils had a successful spell with 11 wins from 16 games. This helped them finish third in the table and qualify for the Champions League. He was also shortlisted for manager of the year.

The former midfielder who had 12 seasons with us a player was someone who was well aware of the traditions and expectations of the club. His first taste of managing was a short spell in charge back in 2021 after the dismissal of Ole Solksjaer. He was also in charge at Championship Middlesbrough for two and a half seasons.

Pressure was on him from the very start. His first two games were at home to Manchester City and away to Arsenal. He won them both. In addition, there was a double over Liverpool and Chelsea, the reintegration of Kobbie Mainoo, moving Bruno Fernandes into a position that suited him better and making the most of the attacking potential.

He spoke to the club website on the announcement:

“Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride.

“Throughout the past five months, this group of players have shown they can reach the standards of resilience, togetherness and determination that we demand here.

“Now it’s time to move forward together again, with ambition and a clear sense of purpose. Manchester United and our incredible supporters deserve to be challenging for the biggest honours again.”

Director of Football, Jason Wilcox, added: “Michael has thoroughly earned the opportunity to continue leading our men’s team. In the time he has been doing the role, we have seen positive results on the pitch, but more than that, an approach which aligns with the club’s values, traditions and history.

It is believed that his coaching staff including Jonathan Woodgate, Steve Holland, Jonny Evans and Travis Binnion have all been retained.

Carrick has signed a deal until 2028. It will be a busy summer ahead!
