Veteran keeper stays at Old Trafford

Manchester United have announced that Tom Heaton has signed an extension to his current deal. He will remain at the club for another season.

The 40-year-old started his career with us having come through the academy, but failed to make any first-team appearances. He spent most of his time out on loan with clubs such as Swindon, Rochdale, Wycombe, and Cardiff. On leaving Utd in 2010, he joined Cardiff on a permanent basis.

It was a move to Burnley where his career really took off. He twice helped the Lancashire club to promotion and was an integral part of Sean Dyche’s side. He memorably kept a clean sheet at Old Trafford in 2016 when he proved unbeatable. He joined Aston Villa upon their promotion back to the Premier League, but saw his time limited by a serious injury. He made his return to Manchester United in 2021.

He has made three appearances in that time, but has been a valuable asset in terms of training with the new goalkeepers and providing a back-up when needed. He also was called up for training purposes in England’s 2024 Euro’s squad.

“It is a huge honour to continue to represent Manchester United,” he said.

“I am really excited to play my role in driving us forward and helping the group to compete for the biggest honours.”

Director of football Jason Wilcox added: “Everyone is well aware of the importance of his leadership and professionalism within the group.

“Tom has played a key role in helping to support Senne Lammens throughout his first season in the Premier League.

“His constant dedication and mentality set a fantastic standard for our goalkeeping group.”

Good to have you aboard Tom!
