Five Star Reds shine in Norway
Manchester United recovered from their loss to Wrexham on Saturday to overwhelm Rosenberg in the sunshine today. Ahead at the break, they netted four times in the second period. Carrick’s young side will certainly have staked their claim for first team action in the season ahead.
It was a poor showing from their hosts though. They are lying in the bottom half of their national league and seldom looked like getting a result. They are far from the side who regularly competed in the Champions League.
Carrick made just two changes from the starting lineup against Wrexham. Radek Vitek came in for his first start after impressing in the second half of that game. Shea Lacey also came in ahead of Jack Fletcher. Much of the talk beforehand concerned youth team players Jim Thwaites and particularly JJ Gabriel.
It was played at a half full stadium in warm conditions. Local fans disagreeing with the timing of the game ahead of a league game on Monday. The ticket prices also caused issues with many.
Mason Mount and Joshua Zirkzee were both sitting deep and spreading passes around as the home midfield afforded them too much space. The latter set up Bryan Mbeumo for an early chance that he shot straight at Leopold Wahlstedt. A sweeping cross-field pass from Mount then starting a move which led to Patrick Dorgu just shooting wide.
The opening goal arrived on 31 minutes. Zirkzee was given far too much room to slide a pass through to Shea Lacey. The young attacker cut inside before curling his effort past the keeper. He will be glad of the opportunity to impress Carrick after a stop-start campaign last season.
Leny Yoro almost made it two prior to the break. His header from a free-kick by Mbeumo was goal-wards but smacked off the crossbar.
Harry Amass was brought on at the break and he was quickly into the action. His pass into the feet of Zirkzee was smart, but the Dutchman still had much to do. He skipped past one defender and another before tapping home for the second.
That prompted a raft of changes. Jacob Devaney was one of the new faces brought on. He was in the right place almost immediately to tap home from a corner. The Irish underage international keen to make an impression also.
Amass added a goal to his assist when he appeared at the back post to tap home from Jaydan Kamason’s low cross. The young full-back looks noticeably fitter and stronger after his long lay-off.

Another burst forward from Kamason brought the fifth goal. He drove into the box and laid a square ball into the area. Ethan Williams stuck out a leg and diverted it home. That made it four academy players scoring in the same game.
That was all the action as the game slowed towards the end. Perhaps the only disappointment was no action for Thwaites or Gabriel. Their time will come though. Both sides will be at home next. United take on Atletico Madrid next Saturday at Old Trafford. It will be the first chance for many to see the recent signings in the flesh. Rosenborg have an important game against Fredrikstad on Monday.
